African Hunting Safari Tipping Guide: How Much Should You Tip on Safari?

One of the most common questions we receive at Africa Hunt Lodge is:

“How much should I tip on an African hunting safari?”

If this is your first trip to Africa you’re not alone. Understanding African safari tipping customs can feel unclear, especially for international hunters.

This guide explains what is customary, what most guests tip and how gratuities are typically handled on an Africa hunting safari.

Is Tipping Expected on an Africa Hunting Safari?

Tipping is always voluntary...but it is a long-standing and appreciated tradition across Southern Africa.

A successful safari depends on an entire team working together behind the scenes and in the field. From your Professional Hunter to the housekeeping staff, every team member contributes to your safety, comfort, and success.

At Africa Hunt Lodge, we believe in transparency so you can plan confidently.

The General Rule: Around 10% of Your Safari

Many hunters choose to tip approximately 10% of the total safari cost, divided among the safari staff.

However, this is simply a guideline. Not a rule.

With exceptional service, many of our clients choose to tip 15–20% of the total safari value. We have seen numerous gratuities in the 20% range when guests feel the experience exceeded expectations.

Ultimately, gratuities are entirely at the discretion of the client and should reflect your satisfaction with the service provided.

  • PH: $700–$1,050

  • Skinners: $140

Does Tipping Have to Be Cash?

Cash is common — and US Dollars are widely accepted — but tips do not have to be cash.

Many clients prefer to either add the gratuity to their final invoice with the final payment method either via US Check or Credit Card

If you would like assistance distributing gratuities fairly among staff, we will be happy to handle that for you.

We aim to make the process simple and convenient.

When Are Tips Given?

Gratuities are typically given at the conclusion of your safari, once all services have been completed.

Some guests prefer to present tips individually. Others prefer the lodge to distribute gratuities evenly. Both options are perfectly acceptable.

Budgeting for Safari Gratuities

When planning your African hunting safari it is wise to factor gratuities into your overall trip budget.

Whether you choose 10%, 15%, or 20%, planning ahead removes uncertainty and ensures a smooth departure at the end of your hunt.
