Golden Wildebeest Hunting

Africa Hunt Lodge allows the opportunity to hunt and harvest the very rare South African Golden Wildebeest. The Limpopo Province of South Africa is one of the only destinations in the World to hunt the Golden Wildebeest. The Golden Wildebeest has been in solely breeding herds up until late 2013, and Africa Hunt Lodge was one of the first companies to begin hunting them. There are no seasonal restrictions on hunting the Golden Wildebeest in South Africa, which makes it a suitable trophy year round. 

Our hunters typically hunt the South African Golden Wildebeest in conjunction with a 7-10 day African Safari. One of our Experienced and Licensed Professional Hunters will be your guide during your Golden Wildebeest Hunt. We typically hunt Golden Wildebeest Safari Style, Spot and Stalk, or by Still Hunting if you are a Bow Hunter. We can accommodate all methods of Hunting for Golden Wildebeest including Rifle, Bow, Black Powder, Crossbow or Handgun. We can accommodate hunters of any age and experience level. 

The Golden Wildebeest which we hunt on our South Africa Concession are the biggest in the World, and Africa Hunt Lodge may be the only destination to hunt World Record Class Golden Wildebeest. You can expect a 25-29 inch in width Golden Wildebeest on average when hunting with Africa Hunt Lodge.

The Golden Wildebeest (Conchaetes gnou), also known as the white-tailed gnu, is a species naive to southern Africa. The Golden Wildebeest is a color variant that was bred approximately in 2008 by game ranchers in South Africa from a Blue Wildebeest color strain.

What do Golden Wildebeest look like:

Golden Wildebeests are large, robust antelopes with a golden-yellow coat. They have a long yellow or golden tail, and a mane that runs along the back of the neck. Both male and female have a set of heavy, forward curving horns.

Golden Wildebeest Habitat:

Golden wildebeests inhabit grasslands and savannas. They enjoy grassy and mountainous areas in the Limpopo province. 

Golden Wildebeest Behavior:

Golden wildebeest travel in herds, and they graze in a line or in loose groups, usually walking in a single file line when moving. These are very sociable, territorial animals. Females and their calf form small herds, and after about a year, males will leave the herd to join a bachelor herd. However, at 4 or 5 years old, the males become highly territorial and leave the bachelor herd. 

Golden Wildebeest Diet:

Golden wildebeest are herbivores, mainly grazing on grasses. Their migration is usually a response to grass availability. They play a crucial role in shaping the vegetation in their habitats through their feeding habits. 

Golden Wildebeest Reproduction:

The primary breeding season for golden wildebeest is from February to April. One calf is usually born after a gestation period of about 8 1/2 months.

Golden Wildebeest Conservation status:

The Golden Wildebeest had faced population decline in the past due to habitat loss and the fact that they are a demanded hunt for their rare coloration, but conservation efforts from South African farmers have helped to stabilize the species numbers, and they are now listed as “Least Concern” on the IUCN Red List.
