The Copper Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) is a medium-sized antelope species native to southwestern Africa which is a color phase variant of the common springbok.

What do Copper Springbok look like:

Copper Springboks have a copper colored coat and copper colored belly, with a dark brown stripe that runs across the flank, separating the dark upper parts from the copper belly. It has a copper face with a white nose, and dark stripes that run from the mouth to eyes, and dark patches on the ears. Both males a female have black horns that curve backward, then inward. The horns can be 14-20 inches long. The females have thinner horns than males, being only 60-70% as long as male horns.

Copper Springbok Habitat:

Copper Springboks inhabit dry grasslands and shrublands, they mostly stay in the arid regions of South Africa. They prefer short grass areas and avoid tall grass, woodlands, and other areas where there’s restricted movement and visibility. They are well adapted to live in harsh desert environments.

Copper Springbok Diet:

Copper Springboks are herbivores, primarily feeding on succulent grasses. They are mainly browsers, but may switch to grazing occasionally. They have adapted to get most of their water from the vegetation they consume.

Copper Springbok Behavior:

Copper Springboks are known for "pronking"... a leap where the springbok arches its back, lifts its feet off the ground, and leaps into the air. This is thought to be a form of communication, or a way to confuse its predators. They are very social animals, often found in herds from a few individuals, to hundreds.

Copper Springbok Cultural Significance:

The Copper Springbok is a color phase springbok from the Common springbok...the Springbok is known as the national animal of South Africa. It’s a symbol often associated with South African sports teams, including the national rugby team, the Springboks.
