The Golden Gemsbok (Oryx gazella) is a large antelope native to arid regions of southern Africa. It is a color phenotype that came from a free-roaming gemsbok population in southern Namibia in 2010. This is a very rare color morph in the Gemsbok species.
What do Golden Gemsbok look like:
The golden gemsbok is known for its long, straight horns that can reach 47 inches! It has a white and golden pattern on its face with a white stripe running down the nose. The coat is a striking golden color, along with a long yellow tail.
Golden Gemsbok Habitat:
Golden Gemsbok are well adapted to harsh and arid environments, like savannas and deserts, and they can survive long periods of time without water. They do this by obtaining moisture from the vegetation they eat.
Golden Gemsbok Diet:
Golden Gemsbok are herbivores, primarily grazing on grasses and leaves. They also will eat any thorny shrubs, roots, or tubers. They supplement their water intake with wild tsama melons and cucumbers that give them the moisture they would get from having access to water.
Golden Gemsbok Behavior:
It’s very hard for predators such as lions and cheetahs to prey on golden gemsbok because of their great agility and speed. Their horns (with are present in both male and female) are also used for defense against predators. They are able to endure high temperatures in their harsh environments, and their skin reflects the suns rays. Golden Gemsbok are very sociable animals that form herds of 10-40 gemsbok, led by a dominant male.
Golden Gemsbok Reproduction:
Golden Gemsbok usually breed every 9 months, depending on water availability. The gestation period lasts about 270 days and they give birth to 1 or 2 offspring. The mother will hide the offspring for 6 weeks after birth, then the mother and calf will rejoin the herd.
