The Red Lechwe (Kobus leche leche) is a medium sized antelope species native to Southern Africa.

What do Red Lechwe look like:

Red lechwe are named for their distinctive reddish-brown coat, which is well-suited to their marshy habitat. They have a white underbelly and rump patch, and males typically have long, spiral-shaped horns, while females are usually hornless.

Red Lechwe Habitat:

Red lechwe are adapted to live in marshy areas with tall grass and plentiful water. They are excellent swimmers and often take to water to escape predators or to find food. Floodplains, marshes, and reed beds are their preferred habitats.

Red Lechwe Diet:

Red lechwe are primarily grazers, feeding on grasses and aquatic plants. Their elongated hooves are adapted for walking on muddy terrain, allowing them to access tender shoots and roots in their wetland habitat.

Red Lechwe Behavior:

Red Lechwe are social animals, usually found in herds, though bachelor groups of males are not uncommon. Males establish territories and may engage in displays of dominance to attract mates.

Red Lechwe Reproduction:

After successful mating, the gestation period for red lechwe is typically around 7 to 8 months. Females give birth to a single calf, although twins are rare. Births often occur during the rainy season when food availability is high. Calves are precocial, meaning they are relatively mature and mobile shortly after birth.

Red Lechwe Conservation Status:

The red lechwe population faces threats from habitat loss due to human encroachment, as well as hunting and competition with domestic livestock for resources. However, they are not currently considered endangered, with stable populations in protected areas.

Red Lechwe Cultural Significance:

In some cultures within their range, red lechwe hold symbolic importance and are featured in traditional myths and stories. Additionally, they are a target species for eco-tourism in areas where they are found, contributing to local economies through wildlife viewing.
