The Spotted Hyena (crocuta crocuta) is a species of hyena native to Sub-Saharan Africa. It is the largest and most well-known species of hyena.
What do Spotted Hyena look like:
Spotted hyenas are distinguished by their sandy colored coat covered in dark spots. They have a robust build with a sloping back and powerful jaws. They have large rounded ears, and a mane on the back that stands erect when the hyena is agitated.
Spotted Hyena Habitat:
The spotted hyena lives in Southern Africa in savannas, grasslands, woodlands, and semi-desserts. They are very adaptable and are found in many different environments across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Spotted Hyena Behavior:
Spotted hyenas are very sociable and are found in clans that are led by a dominant female. While they are skilled hunters, they are also known to be scavengers. Spotted Hyenas make distinct vocalizations, including the well known “laughing” sound.
Spotted Hyena Diet:
The spotted hyena is a scavenging carnivore, preying on just about any small animal. They will also eat insects, bird’s eggs, and wild fruits. They are also powerful hunters that can be capable of taking down large prey like wildebeest or zebra.
Reproduction Cycle of the Spotted Hyena:
Spotted hyenas give birth to a litter of 2 cubs after a gestation period of 90-110 days. The birth is very difficult for the mother, and the death rate for first time mothers is high. Once the cubs are born, males take no part in raising the cubs.
