The Black Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) is a medium-sized antelope found in southern Africa. Similar to the black impala, the black springbok has a color phase developed by selective breeding.

What do Black Springbok look like:

Black Springbok have a dark, almost pitch black coat as a result of genetic variation leading to dark pigmentation. They have a white stripe running up the front of the nose, and they have a skin fold on the back that is usually closed, but when they become excited, it thrusts open fanning stiff black hair. Both sexes have a pair of short black horns that are around 10-14 inches long.

Black Springbok Habitat:

The habitat of a black Springbok is essentially the same as a common Springbok. They are adapted to a variety of environments including arid regions and grasslands. They are normally found in areas with much vegetation, and they can cover long distances in search of food and water.

Distribution of Black Springbok:

Springboks range include mainly the dry areas of south and southwestern Africa, and are found in the central and western parts of South Africa.

Black Springbok Behavior:

Black Springboks are known for their stiff-legged leaps when excited or frightened. This is known as pronking. Breeding season takes place in October and November, and females have produce one offspring at a time.

Black Springbok Conservation status:

Black Springboks are subject to the same conservation concerns as common Springboks, including habitat loss and potential competition with livestock for resources.
