The Lion which we hunt on our South Africa Concessions are all of trophy caliber. Currently, the Lions we hunt are not exportable to the United States, but can be exported elsewhere in the World. We also offer Lioness Hunts year round.
The Africa Lion, (Panthera Leo) is one of the four big cats in the genus Panthera, along with the tiger, leopard, and jaguar. Lions are iconic carnivorous mammals known for their majestic appearance, social behavior, and powerful roars.
What do African Lions look like:
Lions are large cats with a muscular build. They have a golden-yellow coat. Adult male lions typically have a prominent mane of hair encircling their heads, which varies in color from blond to black. The mane is visual indication of a male lion's maturity and it intimidates rivals and attracts mates.
Lion Habitat:
Lions have inhabited various habitats across Africa, including savannas, grasslands, and open woodlands. However, due to habitat loss and fragmentation, they are now primarily found in protected areas and national parks.
Lion Diet:
Lions are apex predators and primarily prey on zebras, wildebeests, kudu buffalo, and various species of antelope. Lionesses are the primary hunters, using coordinated tactics to stalk and ambush prey. After a hunt, lions feed communally, with the dominant males often getting to eat first.
Lion Behavior:
Lions live in groups called prides. A pride typically consists of related females, their offspring, and one or more dominant males. Prides vary in size but can consist of anywhere from a few lions to more than twenty.
Lions are highly territorial and can stay in the same area for generations.
Lion Reproduction:
Lionesses will give birth to a litter of one to four cubs after a gestation period of about 100 to 110 days. Cubs are born blind and depend on their mothers for the first few months. Lionesses within a pride may synchronize their breeding cycles, allowing them to easily care for and protect the cubs.
