This guide explains what is customary, what most guests tip, and how gratuities are typically handled on an African hunting safari.
Is Tipping Expected on an African Hunting Safari?
Tipping is always voluntary, but it is a long-standing and appreciated tradition across Southern Africa.
A successful safari depends on an entire team working together behind the scenes and in the field. From your Professional Hunter to the housekeeping staff, every team member contributes to your safety, comfort, and success.
At Africa Hunt Lodge, we believe in transparency so you can plan confidently.
The General Rule: Around 10% of Your Safari
Many hunters choose to tip approximately 10% of the total safari cost, divided among the safari staff.
However, this is simply a guideline — not a rule.
With exceptional service, many of our clients choose to tip 15–20% of the total safari value. We have seen numerous gratuities in the 20% range when guests feel the experience exceeded expectations.
Ultimately, gratuities are entirely at the discretion of the client and should reflect your satisfaction with the service provided.
How Much to Tip on an African Hunting Safari (Daily Averages)
For a standard 7-day African plains game hunt, here are the average daily gratuities we see at Africa Hunt Lodge:
Professional Hunter (PH) – $100 to $200 Per Day
Your Professional Hunter is with you from sunrise to sunset.
He:
Plans and guides each hunt
Manages trackers and drivers
Judges trophy quality
Ensures safety
Works long hours in the field
Most guests present gratuity directly to their PH at the end of the safari.
7-day average: $700–$1,400
Skinners – $20 Per Day (Each)
Skinners are responsible for:
Trophy caping
Salting and preservation
Preparing hides and horns for export
Their expertise ensures your trophies arrive home in excellent condition.
7-day average: $140 per skinner
Driver – $20 Per Day
Your driver assists with:
Vehicle readiness
Game recovery
Daily logistics
Field support
7-day average: $140
Chef – $50 Per Day
Safari days are long, and great meals make a tremendous difference.
Your chef prepares:
Early breakfasts
Field lunches
Full dinners
Special dietary requests

Housekeeping Staff – $5 Per Day (Per Guest)

Does Tipping Have to Be Cash?
Cash is common — and US Dollars are widely accepted — but tips do not have to be cash.
