Springhare hunting offers one of the most unique and enjoyable night hunting experiences you can have in South Africa. Despite the name, a springhare is not actually a hare at all, but rather a large nocturnal rodent known for its powerful hind legs and distinctive, kangaroo-like movement. These fascinating animals are found throughout southern Africa, but are almost never seen during the day, making them a special species to pursue.
A springhare has a very recognizable look, something like a cross between a small kangaroo and a rabbit. With long back legs, a thick tail used for balance, and large eyes adapted for night vision, they are perfectly built for life after dark. During the day, they remain underground in burrow systems, often sealing the entrances from the inside. Once night falls, they emerge to feed on grasses and vegetation, moving across the landscape in quick, bounding hops.
Springhare hunting is available year-round in South Africa and does not require any special permits for export, making it an easy addition to your safari. The best time to hunt them is during the cooler winter months, particularly during dark moon periods. On bright nights, they tend to be more cautious and do not hold well under a spotlight, but on darker nights they are far more active and easier to approach.
The hunt itself is conducted after dark and is a completely different experience from traditional plains game hunting. You’ll head out with your Professional Hunter, slowly covering ground while scanning with a spotlight for the reflection of a springhare’s eyes. Once spotted, the approach becomes a matter of patience and timing. These animals are constantly on the move, but they will stop briefly while feeding—those moments provide the best opportunity for a clean shot. A light caliber rifle is typically used, allowing for precision while preserving the animal.
While springhare are not considered traditional trophy game, they are a favorite among hunters looking for something different. They make excellent full-body mounts, especially when displayed to highlight their powerful hind legs and digging claws, and are often included in predator or night hunting displays. In some farming areas, they are also managed as a nuisance species due to the burrows they dig, which can pose a risk to livestock and wildlife. Even when hunted in this context, the animal is never wasted, as the meat is highly valued and commonly used by local communities and farm staff.
Adding a springhare hunt to your safari is a great way to experience Africa after dark. It offers a completely different pace and perspective, and for many hunters, it ends up being one of the most memorable parts of the trip. Whether you're looking to add a unique species to your collection or simply spend more time in the field, springhare hunting is a rewarding and enjoyable addition to any safari with Africa Hunt Lodge.
