Species Requiring Advance Hunting Permits in South Africa
Species Requiring Advance Hunting Permits in South Africa
What You Need to Know Before Your Safari
At Africa Hunt Lodge, we pride ourselves on offering ethical, legal, and fully compliant hunting experiences while ensuring our clients enjoy a smooth and stress-free safari—from arrival to trophy export.
One important aspect of planning a successful African hunt is understanding which species require special permits to be issued in advance in order to legally hunt and export them from South Africa. These permits are issued by provincial and national conservation authorities and are mandatory for certain species due to conservation status, export regulations, or international treaty requirements.
Planning ahead is key—and we handle the process for you.
Why Are Advance Permits Required?
Certain species are subject to:
Conservation management programs
CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) regulations
Provincial wildlife controls
Export and international import requirements
These permits must be approved before the hunt takes place. Without them, trophies cannot be legally exported, regardless of whether the hunt itself was successful.
Species That Require Advance Hunting Permits
The following species require permits to be issued prior to the hunt in order for trophies to be legally exported:
Baboon
Bontebok
Caracal
Civet
Nile Crocodile
Common Reedbuck
Brown Hyena
Spotted Hyena
Red Lechwe
Roan Antelope
Tsessebe
Vervet Monkey
Lion
Rhinoceros
Elephant
⚠️ Please note: Some of these species also fall under CITES Appendix I or II, which means additional export and import permits may be required depending on your home country.
How Far in Advance Do Permits Need to Be Pulled?
Permit timelines vary by species, but as a general guideline:
Most plains game & predators:
⏱️ Approximately 4–6 weeks prior to the huntHigh-value or CITES-listed species (Crocodile, Lion, Elephant, Rhino):
⏱️ 8–12 weeks or longer may be required
Because timelines can change without notice, we strongly recommend finalizing permit-required species as early as possible during the booking process.
What Information Is Needed?
To apply for advance permits, we typically require:
A copy of the hunter’s passport
Hunters Shipping address and Telephone number
Confirmed hunt dates
Species selection
Deposit confirmation (for certain species)
Once received, Africa Hunt Lodge handles the entire permit application process on your behalf.
